When assessing Argentinian Malbec I always search for the iron fist in a velvet glove. Something that has power and punch but also retains a certain level of elegance and restraint. Tikal consistently nails it for me. "Love Affair" is an apt name for this wine as it has classic Malbec ripeness, silky tannins, and a slight earthiness. Expect notes of blackberries, ripe cherries, and pronounced yet balanced toasted oak. The wines from Tikal have a long history in Argentina. The founder Ernesto Catena is a 4th-generation winemaker of Italian descent. His father Nicolas Catena was a pioneer who helped make Argentinian wine what it is today. While they are "New World" wines they are clearly rooted in Old World techniques. Taking an almost artistic mindset, their wines are a true expression of the land they come from.
