The 1986 Grand Puy Lacoste is one of my favourite vintages from that decade. It has a heartwarming, youthful nose of black and red fruit, cedar and camphor, more open than previous bottles. The palate is medium-bodied with tannins that have softened over the years, yet there is still decent backbone and grip. Wonderfully balanced, the 1986 unfolds layers of graphite-infused fruit and becomes unusually opulent towards the finish. Excellent. Tasted at the Académie du Vin dinner in Bordeaux.
