A single barrel whisky is a quintessential representation of the relationship between its craftspeople, wood and time. While most single malts work much like an orchestra -multiple casks in concert, coming together to achieve specific notes — The Balvenie Single Barrel is a soloist, relying only on the unique properties of a single cask to create an exceptional whisky. Each cask is subtly different, yet hand-selected by our Malt Master Kelsey McKechnie for its familiar sweet vanilla and subtle oak characteristics. First released in 2013 under the guidance and direction of Honorary Ambassador and Former Malt Master David C Stewart MBE, this Single Barrel expression from The Balvenie has been aged for 12 years in a first fill Bourbon cask of a single distillation.

A rare class of whisky, highly sought after by collectors and connoisseurs. Each bottle comes from an individual barrel instead of being the result of a marriage or blend of the contents of multiple barrels. As a result, the whisky in each bottle of this rare single malt can vary slightly in its flavor and aroma.

This term applies to a cask that has never held Scotch whisky before. Many times these casks have previously held other spirits such as Bourbon — as with The Balvenie Single Barrel 12 Year Old.
